SPARROWNEST
Academic, Research on Experimental Timber Design
Collaboration with Shawn Bailey + Lancelot Coar
Mikiinok Waajew Forest School
This research investigates roundwood timber construction through experimental joinery and holistic technological languages. A catalog of intuitive, site-adjustable timber connections is being developed and tested through SPARROWNEST, a 1:5 scale prototype structure designed to simulate full-scale conditions and construction sequencing.
Built collaboratively by architecture and engineering students, a unique version of SPARROWNEST will be constructed at full scale within the CAST facility on campus, dismantled and catalogued, then transported and rebuilt on-site. This iterative process allows for the testing of adaptive, impromptu construction methods in response to real-world variables.
Owned and run by Shawn Bailey, Mikiinok Waajew (Snapping Turtle Mountain) was a multidisciplinary site for the experimentation and exploration of structures and arts related to land-based practice.
